Italy Travel

by Laura Bezuidenhout

I traveled to the UK for two years in 2000 on an ancestral visa. I will never forget my holiday to Italy during that time. We traveled with a tour bus and took the ferry over to France. We passed the famous White Cliffs of Dover along the way. Our journey took us through Amsterdam, Switzerland and eventually we arrived in Malcesine in Northern Italy. It was beautiful, just as I had always imagined Italy would be. Malcesine is a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. It is a quaint tourist resort with cobbled streets and a castle – Castello Scaligero, the town’s main tourist attraction. One the one side of the town is the beautiful blue lake waters and behind it is the massive mountain ridge called Monte Baldo. There is a ferry that links Malcesine to the other lakeside resorts, which makes sightseeing very easy. As you stroll down the picturesque streets, you will see the locals and the holidaymakers, sitting around tables outside, eating ice-cream or drinking coffee. The ever so polite salesman will usher you into his shop to boast his very modern and beautifully crafted leather handbags, jackets and shoes. Lake Garda attracts many avid paragliders and kite surfers.
We took a cable car up to the top of Monte Baldo. I remember there was still ice on the grass and landscape up there, meanwhile down below, on the other side of the village, people were paragliding on the beautiful lake with the sun beaming down! The cable car climbs from 100m to 1760m and in winter is a very popular base for mountain sports. I don’t think I have ever known another place where one can go skiing in the morning and then paragliding or windsurfing in the afternoon. The view of course is magnificent as one gazes down at Malcesine’s huddled rooftops, and the beautiful apple trees and greenery of the mountain range, not to mention the spectacular Lake Garda below.
In the evenings, we would sit in the town square and listen to people playing music, order a fresh bowl of handmade pasta and sip on a glass of warm red wine. The ambiance said it all. This was a holiday to remember!
At the waterfront, there are a number of things one can do. I remember we hired a small foot pedal boat and headed out to the lake. The views from our tiny boat were magnificent of the mountain range behind the village, and the charming view of the town itself from the front was like looking into a story book of Italy!
I can truly say, my holiday to Italy was an adventure I will always cherish and remember, not to mention my genuine leather jacket, shoes and handbag as mementos. A place high recommended in my books!
